Preparing for Battle

Evansville, your time is coming. The war you fight every day takes it’s toll, but, as a citizen of this fine city, you have a special date with destiny that no other metropolis can truly understand. Some eagerly await it, some dread it, and some do equal parts of both, but the one thing you can’t do for one week in October is ignore it.

Of course, I’m talking about the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, celebrating it’s 91st year this year. Think about that for a second – Evansville had the Fall Festival before the White House had radio. If you looked up “cultural institution” in the dictionary, you could find a picture of Franklin St. during the first full week of October.

What that means for Evansvillians is that our city becomes the world capital of fair food for one week every year. People travel here from across the country to people watch and experience the parades, talent shows, rides, and games. The primary draw, though, is the food, and what food it is. Booths as far as the eye can see, and the vast majority of them frying things that make you question your sanity for wanting them.

For those of us looking to let loose, there’s nothing better than roaming the Festival trying everything that sounds remotely interesting, calories be darned. Those of us trying to maintain good eating habits or overcome bad eating habits, however, can look at the week as a buzzsaw that just destroys all the hard work they’ve build up so far.

It doesn’t have to be!

The great thing about the Fall Festival is, while a lot of the food is a bit indulgent, there is a LOT of people offering a LOT of different things. Many of them aren’t bad at all, and some of them are outright diet friendly. It’s a matter of studying the Munchie Map, forming a plan, and sticking to it. On this blog, we’ll show you some of those options during the week of the Festival, as well as share with you where you can get it and what some of the nutritional information is, so make sure you’re staying tuned in during October 1-6.

It’s almost game time, everyone. Start your battle preparations soon!
